Sarah Whedon in the ABC Television Network's "Brothers & Sisters"
As Sarah Whedon, the eldest member of the Walker family who struggles to balance motherhood and her career on ABC's "Brothers & Sisters," Rachel Griffiths has received two Emmy nominations (2008 and 2007), a Golden Globe nomination (2008) and an AFI International Award nomination (2007).
Griffiths is also well known for her role as Brenda Chenowith on the HBO hit series "Six Feet Under," a role that garnered her a Golden Globe, two Emmy nominations and the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actress in 2006.
Her breakthrough film role as the brilliantly crafted Rhonda in "Muriel's Wedding" won her both the Australian Film Critics Award and the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Supporting Actress. She was nominated for an Academy Award(r) for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Hilary DuPrŽ in "Hilary and Jackie." Other feature credits include "Step Up," "Ned Kelley," "The Rookie," "Blow," "Me Myself I," "Among Giants" and "My Best Friend's Wedding."
A native of Melbourne, Griffiths graduated from Victoria College with a Bachelor of Education in drama and dance. After graduation she continued over the next six years to work with the Melbourne and Sydney Theatre Companies, starring in "Sylvia," "The Sisters Rosensweig," "The Grapes of Wrath" and "The Doll House." In 2002 she starred in David Auburn's stage play "Proof" for the Melbourne Theatre Company and took home the Green Room Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
In 1999 Griffiths made her directorial debut with her first short film, "Tulip," which went on to win Best Short Film at the Toronto and Palm Springs Film Festivals. She completed her second short film in 2002, "Roundabout," which won the Best Short Film Award from the Australian Film Critics Circle and the Melbourne Film Festival.
